Commuter Student Services
Commuter Student Services
The Lincoln center campus of Fordham University provides students with a unique experience. One of the features that makes our campus so unique is its large commuter population. The Lincoln Center campus is home to approximately 1,600 full-time, undergraduate students. Roughly half of the students are commuter students, meaning they list their home residence in any one of the neighborhoods within the local tri-state area. Commuter students ride the subway and commuter trains; they travel by bus, taxi or car during their daily journey to campus. Commuters are an important part of the Lincoln Center campus and a variety of on-campus programs exist to involve commuter students in campus life and enhance their experience at the University. Commuter Student Services (CSS) are offered through the Office of Student Leadership and Community Development within the Division of Student Affairs.
Please peruse our website to see descriptions of the variety of programs offered by the Office of Student Leadership and Community Development. While most programs are available to both residents and commuters, there are several programs reserved for commuting students. If you have any questions about programs for commuting students, please contact Krista Kohlmann, the Graduate Intern for Commuter Student Services, at 212-930-8832 or kohlmann@fordham.edu. You can also visit Krista in the Student Organization Resource Center, Room SL-19. The following paragraphs will explain many of the programs and services offered to commuting students.

Commuter Newsletter
CSS sends out a bi-weekly newsletter about all commuter events on campus. If you are interested in receiving a copy of the newsletter, please contact the Graduate Intern for Commuter Student Services at kohlmann@fordham.edu and ask to be subscribed to the newsletter.
Locker Rental
The Office of Student Leadership and Community Development rents lockers for the fall, spring and summer session to commuting students. Locker rental fees are $15.00 for the full academic year and $10.00 for a single semester or summer session. To rent a locker, please stop by the Office of Student Leadership and Community Development in LL 408.
Freshman Commuter Barbecue
During the summer, new commuter students are invited to attend a summer outdoor barbecue, where they have the opportunity to meet other new students, meet campus administrators and tour the campus. At the barbecue, students learn more about Student Activities, New Student Orientation and Commuter Life at Fordham. Several contests and promotions sponsored by the Commuting Student Association (CSA) are among the activities featured at the barbecue. This year’s Commuter Barbeque will be held on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 from 12p.m.-4p.m.
New Student Orientation
New Student Orientation takes place at the start of each semester and there are several programs presented specifically for commuting students. In addition to the general Orientation program, specific commuter workshops include a Commuting Tips session, a Traveling in New York City workshop and a Commuting Students Association (CSA) meeting. This year’s fall Orientation program will be held from August 30-September 1, 2009.
Commuting Students Association (CSA)
CSA is a departmentally-sponsored student group that works with the student government as an advocate for commuter needs. CSA plans social, educational, and service-oriented programs for commuter students on campus as well. They host monthly Coffee Breaks and the annual C-SAW program (Commuter Student Appreciation Week). In addition, they are currently initiating new programs like Commuters Giving Back (community service project) and a trip to the New York Transit Museum. CSA wants you to get involved! Check out their meetings on Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. for the fall 2009 semester (location TBA). Their office is located in Lowenstein Room 204B. The CSA office is easily accessible to commuter students as it is located adjacent to the Lowenstein 2nd Floor Lounge.
Commuter Brunch
CSS sponsors a bi-weekly Commuter Brunch program for commuter students. If you’re hungry for a late morning snack or just want the opportunity to mingle with other commuter students, then this is your chance! Come meet the graduate intern for Commuter Student Services or just grab a bite to eat before you go to your afternoon classes.
First-Year Commuter Luncheon
CSS is always looking for feedback on the first-year student experience at Fordham. Enjoy a free lunch and talk about how to make the commuter student experience better for all students. New program ideas have already been discussed and are in the works, so come hear about them. You must RSVP for this event.
Subway Series
The Subway Series is a commuter student outreach program run by CSS. During the week of tabling, the Graduate Intern surveyed students to hear more about what programs they would like to see on the Lincoln Center campus.
Commuter-Friendly Spaces
CSS wants to remind you that there are places on campus where you can go to feel welcome and comfortable. The Student Lounge at the back of the Cafeteria and the 2nd Floor Lounge of Lowenstein are both places for commuters to relax and get together when they are at school.
Commuter Freshman Mentors (CFMs)
The Commuter Freshman Mentors (CFM) consist of 12 commuter students, who guide the incoming freshmen in every way possible. CFMs help the freshmen adapt to college life socially and academically by maintaining contact with them, and by setting up various types of programs throughout the fall semester. In addition, they share their experiences both as commuters and as Fordham students, as well as the knowledge that they have gained throughout their time here at Fordham.
