Applying to the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences
Fordham University’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences is a selective school. The selectivity rate for Fall 08 admissions was 53% for M.A./M.S. students and 20% for Ph.D. students.
To be competitive, applicants should be aware of the following guidelines: a 3.0 GPA or higher for the Master’s degree and a 3.5 GPA or higher for the Ph.D. degree is normally required.
The following principles guide decisions on admission:
- Before making departmental/program admission recommendations to the Dean, at least two members of the unit’s faculty carefully read each application file.
- Admission decisions are based on careful consideration of the transcript(s), the statement of intent, the writing sample, the recommendation letters and GRE scores. No single element of the application file is read in isolation.
- The department/program also takes into account the appropriateness of the applicant’s academic project to the characteristics of the curriculum and the scholarly profile of the faculty.
Students are encouraged to visit Fordham to speak with faculty of the department/program to which they are applying.
* Contact the department chair/graduate director for signature (see the Program & Degrees webpage)
